The Story Behind Providence Town Centre
Check out some April 2026 drone footage of the build:
The need
South Ripley already has a population of 6,000+.
But everyone has to head across the Centenary to Ripley Town Centre for shops. It’s never going to be a completed community without a proper community shopping centre. Homes, schools, parks, sports fields and the Ripley Satellite Hospital only gets you 90% there.
Now with this neighbourhood hub in place residents have a place to meet, hang out and shop.
Jackie Davison, the new Coles Providence store manager, summed it up on opening day: “This store is about more than just groceries, it’s about filling a real need for the growing South Ripley community.”
From plans to construction
Stockland announced development approval in September 2024. The supermarket operator wasn’t named at the time. Coles was confirmed as anchor tenant in February 2025, when construction started.
Stage 1 covers the full-line Coles plus specialty shops across 4 categories:
- Groceries
- Food and dining
- Health, pharmacy and services
- Gym and childcare
The total build cost was $65 million, supporting 2,000+ direct and indirect jobs during construction. Now open, the centre supports 338 ongoing jobs, with Coles alone employing 140+ locals.
Built for the long haul
The centre is targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. A 440kVA rooftop solar system paired with a 770kW battery handles a big chunk of the day-to-day energy load on-site.
What’s next: Stage 2
Stockland has confirmed later stages will add a pub and more retail as Providence grows.
The original 2023 council planning approval also covers a swim school, which hasn’t been publicly announced yet but could form part of future stages.
The site was subdivided from one lot into 4 during the approval process, so there’s physical room for more buildings on the same precinct.
The roads
The road network had to catch up too.
In October 2025, Stockland opened a new 1 km section through the town centre area, connecting Providence Parade to Lucas Drive while Barrams Road works continued.
