Central Ipswich UK, with the compact town centre in the foreground and the River Orwell waterfront beyond.
You remember that whole “Ed Sheeran, come to Ipswich” thing from early 2026?
The mayor, local radio stations and social media pages were all trying to get Sheeran to visit Ipswich while in Brisbane for his concerts.
Remember?
Well, just in case you never saw it: the mayor and her team launched a campaign to convince Sheeran to visit Australian Ipswich while touring down under.
The reason?
Ed Sheeran has a lifelong connection to the other Ipswich. Ipswich UK.
You see:
Sheeran is a lifelong supporter and part owner of Ipswich Town FC, their professional football club valued at A$530 million.
And all this hoo-ha worked.
In February 2026, Sheeran quietly made the detour to Ipswich.
To his mural behind the Ipswich City Council building on Nicholas Street…
…And signed it:
“lots of love. Ed xx 2026”
Both Ipswiches now have an Ed Sheeran mural. The Ipswich QLD mural was painted to convince him to visit. The UK mural on Sir Alf Ramsey Way shows him as a boy and an adult in Ipswich Town colours. “The Tractor Boys” is the club’s nickname.
But Ed Sheeran is only the latest connection between the two Ipswiches.
Let’s take a closer look at what else connects us.

Where Is Ipswich UK?
Ipswich UK in eastern England, shown here in relation to London, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam and other nearby cities.
Take a look.
Ipswich sits in Suffolk on the eastern side of England.
It is about 105 km north-east of London.
You can travel from Ipswich to London Liverpool Street by direct train in about an hour.
Ipswich sits on the main London-Norwich rail line, with the fastest direct services reaching London Liverpool Street in about one hour.
That is about the same distance as driving from Ipswich QLD to the Gold Coast.
The town is not on the coast. It sits at the head of the tidal River Orwell. The river then runs out to the North Sea.
Ipswich sits inland at the head of the tidal River Orwell, which continues towards the North Sea.
That river explains a lot of what you are about to see.
One Compact Town
Looking north across the tidal barrier and waterfront towards the town centre and Christchurch Mansion.
Now zoom in.
The football ground sits beside the railway station. The old town centre is just beyond it. The waterfront and marina is on the other side.
From roughly 500 metres above, the railway station is beside the Ipswich Town FC stadium. Neptune Marina and The Waterfront to the east. Hadleigh Road Industrial Estate to the north west.
You can see almost everything the town is known for in one aerial image.
About 140,000 people live inside a borough covering only about 39.5 square kilometres. The same size of Pine Mountain in Ipswich.
Ipswich is Suffolk’s main town
But it is not officially a city.
A large population does not automatically make a place a city in the UK.
- Ipswich UK: became self governing in 1200, when King John granted it a royal charter.
- Ipswich QLD: became a city in 1904.
This compact layout is the first big difference.
The Size Difference
The City of Ipswich QLD council area covers 1,093.9 square kilometres, almost 28 times the 39.5-square-kilometre English borough. In fact, Ipswich UK is the same size as Ipswich suburb Pine Mountain.
Take a look.
Ipswich LGA vs. Ipswich UK.
Quite the difference, right?
Big vs. dense:
- Ipswich QLD: 1,093.9 square kilometres and 268,272 people in June 2025.
- Ipswich UK: About 39.5 square kilometres and 140,274 people in 2024.
- The result: Ipswich UK is 14.5x more densely populated.
Is it a fair comparison?
The City of Ipswich QLD obviously covers densely populated areas like Springfield, Goodna and Redbank Plains but also rural and industrial areas like Purga, Mount Mort and Swanbank.
In England, the boundary wraps tightly around one built-up town.
But that is the point.
The same name covers two very different places.
Ipswich UK is not small in the way you may expect. It is simply packed into a much tighter space.
Let’s look again.
Compare Ipswich UK to Pine Mountain.
They are the same size.
Imagine 140,000 people living in Pine Mountain.
Ipswich UK occupies almost the same land area as Pine Mountain, but contains about 140,000 people.
Ipswich Began With the River
Ipswich Waterfront surrounds the old Wet Dock at the head of the tidal River Orwell.
Ipswich UK began because it is beside this water.
More than 1,300 years ago, traders from Europe arrived at a landing place on the River Orwell. The settlement was called Gipeswic.
It became a permanent trading town in the 600s and early 700s.
Wow!
Ipswich was one of England’s first trading towns. Suffolk’s archaeology service says it is the only one still on its original site. Ipswich Borough Council also found that some streets have been used without a break since about AD 700.
This is why Ipswich calls itself England’s oldest Anglo-Saxon town still lived in today.
Even the old name comes from trade. Wic meant a trading settlement. Nobody knows for sure where Gipe came from.
The waterfront has changed a lot since then. The Wet Dock opened in 1842. At the time, it was the largest enclosed dock in the United Kingdom. The Old Custom House was built beside it in 1844.
The Ipswich Waterfront walk links the landmarks surrounding the old Wet Dock, all within a compact section of the town.
Think about it.
The timing is perfect.
At the same time the Ipswich UK Wet Dock opened in 1842, Henry Wade was drawing the first town plan for Limestone in Queensland.
The words To be called IPSWICH were added to the plan later. Governor Sir George Gipps started using Ipswich in official letters in February 1843.
Why did Limestone QLD become Ipswich?
- The landscape theory: Captain Harry Rous thought the area looked like the countryside around Ipswich in Suffolk.
- The name theory: Governor Gipps may have liked the similarity between his surname and Gipeswic.
Nobody has found a clear answer. Ipswich Libraries lists both as theories. Neither has been proven.
Older Than Australia
Start with Christchurch Mansion
If there is one historic Ipswich landmark visitors are usually told to see, it is Christchurch Mansion. Begun in 1548 on the site of a medieval priory, the Tudor mansion now operates as a museum inside Christchurch Park. It is more than 300 years older than Ipswich QLD’s earliest surviving colonial landmarks.
This is probably closer to the English Ipswich you pictured.
Yeah?
When it was built in 1548, Australia was still 353 years away from becoming a country.
By 1894, the mansion was at risk of being knocked down. A local businessman bought it, saved it and gave it to the town the following year.
There was one condition.
The council also had to buy the surrounding park and open it to the public.
Next comes Tooley Court and Curson Lodge
Tooley Court (left), where homes for poor residents were founded in 1550 and rebuilt in 1846, and Curson Lodge on St Nicholas Street (right), with a 15th-century brick cellar beneath its 17th-century timber frame.
Tooley Court began as housing for poor residents. It was paid for by one of the town’s richest merchants, whose trade reached the Netherlands, Iceland and northern Spain.
By the time Limestone became Ipswich in 1843, the charity behind Tooley Court had already been running for 293 years.
Curson Lodge is really two different ages in one building.
The brick cellar dates to the 1400s. The timber house above it dates to the 1600s.
It was once part of a much larger mansion owned by a soldier who worked at the royal court and also acted as a spy.
Finally, there is the Ancient House and 4 College Street
The Ancient House on Butter Market (left) and the 16th- or 17th-century house at 4 College Street (right).
The Ancient House stands on Butter Market. Its timber frame dates to the 1400s. It was heavily changed in 1567, while its famous decorated frontage was added between 1660 and 1670.
Look closely and you will find Europe, Asia, Africa and America worked into the plaster.
The house at 4 College Street is much less showy.
But even if it was built at the very end of the 1600s, it still predates the naming of Ipswich QLD by more than 140 years.
And the streets are older again.
Some around this part of town have been used without a break since about AD 700. They were already around 700 years old when the Ancient House appeared.
In Ipswich UK, the history is not kept inside one museum.
It is built into the town centre.
The Modern Surprise
The Grade I-listed Willis Building was completed in 1975 and designed by Foster Associates.
Take a look at that green roof.
That’s The Willis Building in the middle of Ipswich in England. It was completed in 1975.
Foster Associates designed it before Norman Foster became one of the world’s best-known architects.
Historic England calls it Foster’s first large building with several floors. It used curved glass and open office space. It also had the first escalators used inside an office building.
It received Grade I heritage protection in 1991. That was only 16 years after it opened.
The Ancient House and Christchurch Mansion have the same grade.
The building still looks modern. Its glass reflects the much older streets around it.
In one view, you can see the two sides Ipswich UK…
….historic and modern.
Football at the Centre
Portman Road, the 30,000-seat home of Ipswich Town FC, sits beside the town centre and railway station.
This is probably why the name Ipswich is familiar around the world.
For many people outside the town, Ipswich means Ipswich Town FC.
Portman Road (the stadium) holds more than 30,000 people in a borough of ~140,000.
That gives the town 1 seat for every 5 people.
You can walk from the railway station to the stadium in less than 10 minutes. It sits beside the town centre, not out near a motorway in an industrial estate.
Under Alf Ramsey, Ipswich Town became English league champion in 1962. Ramsey later led England to victory in the 1966 World Cup.
The club also won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981.
This is where Ed Sheeran enters the story again.
He has supported Ipswich Town since childhood and bought a 1.4 per cent minority stake in 2024. Undisclosed sum.
That is why the campaign to bring him to Ipswich QLD made sense. His link is to Ipswich Town.
Sport works differently here.
Ipswich has the Jets. But your support might also go to the Queensland Maroons, Brisbane Broncos or Brisbane Lions.
No single local club sits at the centre of Ipswich QLD like Ipswich Town FC does in Ipswich UK.
A Different Kind of Flood Town
The Ipswich Tidal Barrier can raise its 200-tonne steel gate to stop North Sea storm surges reaching the town.
Now for the part that may feel familiar.
Both Ipswiches grew beside rivers. Both have been shaped by floods.
- Ipswich QLD: Heavy rain across the Bremer and Brisbane river catchments causes river flooding. Flash flooding can also hit quickly.
- Ipswich UK: Storm surges from the North Sea push water up the River Orwell towards the town.
So English Ipswich built this.
The nearly A$145 million flood protection system uses a 200-tonne rotating steel gate. The gate normally sits below the water.
If a dangerous storm surge is on the way, the gate can rise within minutes.
The system also includes about one kilometre of flood walls. It has seven floodgates and two Wet Dock floodgates. The Environment Agency says it protects more than 2,400 homes and 300 businesses.
You could not simply copy this on the Bremer River. Ipswich UK faces storm surges from the sea. Ipswich QLD faces floodwater from large river catchments. Each place needs a different type of protection.
So That is the Other Ipswich
It is not a tiny village.
It is not officially a city.
It is a compact working town.
Its 30,000-seat football ground, Tudor buildings, modern glass offices and tidal waterfront are all within walking distance.
Ipswich QLD took the name in 1843. By then, some streets in Ipswich UK had already been in use for more than 1,100 years.
If you visit Ipswich UK anytime soon, the most familiar thing will be the name on the train station.
