IPSWICH AS A CITY.

It will be remembered that at the last meeting of the Ipswich Town Council, on the motion of Alderman A. J. Stephenson, a motion was unanimously carried, to the effect that the requisite steps should be taken to have the town of Ipswich proclaimed a city. On Thursday his Worship the Mayor (Alderman Wm. Reilly) received a joint telegram from the members for the town, the Hon. J. W. Blair (Attorney-General) and Mr. W. Ryott Maughan, stating that effect had been given to the resolution by Order-in-Council. It is understood that an announcement will be published in to-day’s “Government Gazette” proclaiming the town a city. In honour of the new dignity conferred upon the place the municipal flag was hoisted over the Town Hall yesterday, while the flags at the “Queensland Times” Buildings and the Boys’ Grammar School were also flying. The authorities are to be commended for their promptitude in giving effect to the resolution, while Alderman Reilly is to be congratulated upon being the first Mayor of the new-born city.

Note: The mayor referred to is Hugh Reilly (QT, 13 Feb 1904, “THE NEW MAYOR.”). We have preserved the article’s original wording.
