Moreton Bay has used cameras on garbage trucks to scan roads while bins are collected. The system helped identify potholes, cracks and other road damage, then sent the data to council’s asset team for repair jobs.

San José in California has also trialled AI road scanning, reporting high accuracy for pothole detection.

The real test

The useful version is simple: find problems earlier, map them better, and send crews where they are needed most.

The question is whether Ipswich residents see faster fixes, or just another council dashboard.
